Research Activities in Which Undergraduates Participate:
Students participate in the analysis of microbial diversity and physiology. Students often cultivate microorganisms and evaluate their physiological characteristics. Students also often use molecular approaches for characterizing microorganisms and microbial communities. Students learn a variety of modern techniques from microbiology including but not limited to: cultivation and isolation of microorganisms, PCR and qPCR, DNA sequence analysis and phylogeny. Past students have discovered and named new species of bacteria.
